SONOMA, Calif. (Sept. 6, 2017) - The full field of Verizon IndyCar® Series drivers, including the drivers in contention for the series championship, are scheduled to participate in a series-sanctioned open test at Sonoma Raceway on Thursday, Sept. 14, the day before the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma race weekend, Sept. 15-17.
The six-hour session on the 2.385-mile, 12-turn road course is open to ticket holders for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma and spectators who purchase a race ticket at the gate. Verizon IndyCar Series teams are slated to be on track from 10 a.m.-noon and 2-6 p.m.; Formula Car Challenge will also hit the track that day.
Fans can watch the test session from open seating areas, stroll through the paddock and attend the lunchtime press conference with select drivers. The Raceway Café will also be open for lunch.
Team Penske's Josef Newgarden enters the race weekend with a narrow three-point lead over Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon. Team Penske teammates Helio Castroneves (-22 points) and Simon Pagenaud (-34 points) round out the top four. With double-points on the line in Sonoma, Will Power, fifth in the standings (-68 points), Nevada City native Alexander Rossi, sixth in the standings (-84 points) and Graham Rahal, seventh in the standings (-94 points), also remain in contention for the championship.
Tickets are still available for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, Sept. 15-17, including the Total Access Package, which includes a reserved-seat ticket and a garage/pit/pre-race pass for $99.
