Three Toyota drivers had the opportunity to meet with the press prior to the Toyota/Save Mart 350 race weekend and reveal what they have done to prepare to overcome the challenging 10-turn road course.
During today’s press luncheon at the iconic McCormick & Kuleto’s restaurant in San Francisco, Toyota Cup Series drivers Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Xfinity Series Kaz Grala were clear that nothing could top a win this weekend. All drivers mentioned having put in the time in the simulator in order to help put a Toyota in victory lane and enjoy that sip of wine from the winner’s goblet.
“I feel like Tyler might have negotiated in his contract to live in the simulator, because all that extra time he gets keeps him winning or performing well in all these road courses,” said Bubba Wallace referencing Reddick’s last win at Circuit of The Americas.
Reddick was later asked during the press conference what his thoughts were on why the odds for this weekend favored him more than other drivers in the field. “I honestly don’t get why I am favored to win, I didn’t grow up racing on road courses. I think the challenge and thrill behind fighting the car and trying to shave a few seconds here and there have kept me a competitive driver within myself.”
A driver that has been competitive on road courses and one that might have an advantage over the field this weekend is Kaz Grala. This year marks the first year that the NASCAR Xfinity Series will race at Sonoma Raceway, and a great portion of the field has never even raced here. Grala’s advantage comes from having competed in the Camping World Truck Series just last year and in the ARCA Menards Series West in previous years. “I feel like having driven here last year definitely helps me know more about the track than others, but the field is very diverse with a great selection of Cup drivers joining us this weekend.”
